Some K-mart and Sears Stores to Close
Salinas, Calif.- One of the nation's largest retailers announced it's shutting down more than a hundred stores. Sears said hliday sales dropped significantly this year, forcing them to close Sears and K-mart stores across the country.
There are five K-mart stores and two Sears on the Central Coast. Owners of business near Sears and K-mart stores are worried about the ripple affect.
"It's one of the anchor stores. It's the biggest store around here. So it draws in a lot of people. They send us a lot of customers," James Brownfield, the owner of vacuum center, said about the K-mart store.
Business owners at West Laurel Shopping Plaza in Salinas said they depend on customer traffic K-mart brings to the plaza.
"They'll go shopping and after they go shopping they'll come here for pizza," said Rose Lara, a manager at Mountain Mike's Pizza. "So you we do rely on K-mart. They bring in a lot of customers."
There are about a dozen small businesses in the shopping center. Two of the store lots are currently empty and businesses said that is not uncommon. Now business owners fear it will take years for the city to replace Kmart if it closes.
