Flashback to the 1960s, when this already aging mainframe has begun to crash intermittently overnight, according to a pilot fish in the know.

But there's no obvious pattern. "Some nights the mainframe system crashed, some nights it did not," fish says. "Finally, one of the operators decided to babysit it overnight. He went in and sat in the computer room all night."

And nothing happens.

Operator camps out in the computer room a second night, and a third. The system doesn't crash.

On the fourth night, he stays home. The mainframe crashes.

After another week of sometimes babysitting and sometimes staying home, operator concludes that the system crashes only when he's not there.

But he's not done. The next thing he tries is to sit outside the computer room and observe from there. On the first night of that new approach, he sees a janitor enter the room to clean the floors -- but that's not the problem, because the mainframe doesn't crash.
