ST. CHARLES TWP. — Muhammad Jaffrie silently removed his crisp, black suit jacket, striped tie and leather belt in a Kane County courtroom before being led away in handcuffs to begin the seven-year sentence he received Monday for reckless homicide.
Kane County Judge David Akemann gave the 29-year-old Crystal Lake man the maximum sentence after he pled guilty last month to four counts of reckless homicide stemming from a 2007 crash that killed all four of his passengers.
While Jaffrie technically was eligible for probation, Akemann, said he felt the prison sentence was justified. “Probation or conditional discharge would deprecate the seriousness of his conduct,” said Akemann, who also noted Jaffrie had two previous speeding convictions in Illinois and a felony from Texas on his record.
The seven-year sentence is the maximum under state law, but Akemann said he could have imposed an extended term of seven years because more than one person was killed. The judge cited several mitigating factors in choosing not to impose the extended term.
