Fresno shoppers adjust to earlier Black Friday nuttiness
Thousands of shoppers mobbed Valley retailers as stores opened earlier than ever for Black Friday deals on Thursday night.
Many retailers competing for shoppers' limited dollars opened at midnight or before for the first time, creating different scenes around Fresno. There were short lines outside Macy's and efficient purchases at Target in River Park. But other retailers, such as the Walmart on West Shaw Avenue, faced massive crowds and confusion over doorbuster deals.
Black Friday is predicted to be the No. 1 shopping day during the holiday season for sales and foot traffic this year, according to Chicago-based ShopperTrak research firm. About 90% of Black Friday purchases are bought by shoppers for themselves or their families, including items such as TVs, and aren't gifts, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers.
Here's a look at how the shopping unfolded:
8:45 p.m.: More than 430 people were in line outside Toys "R" Us on West Shaw Avenue, waiting for its 9 p.m. opening.
