[Editor's note: While the tone of this article may seem a bit light, I assure you the actual actions and attitudes of the Mesquite Police Department officers were anything but. These guys are good.]
The Mesquite Police Department invited local media outlets to watch a SWAT training session Wednesday, Feb. 15. Of course, I jumped at the chance to observe our best guys in action. I was doubting my sanity though as I watched storm clouds roll through the valley. On my way there I was feeling much the same as I did the freezing, rainy night I watched the construction crew lay girders for a new bridge at the I-15, Exit 120 site. "Can't these guys ever pick a nice, sunny, warm day for these things?
When I first arrived at the 'scene,' the Special Weapons And Tactics Team, composed of regular MPD officers who take on the additional duty, or danger if you will, were taking a dry run through the training scenario. They were practicing a hostage situation in which the bad guy and the victim were in a vehicle. The bad guy in this case was an overstuffed plastic and rubber dummy. The victim, however, was an actual person. The vehicle was already a little beaten up but would be even worse for the wear when our guys were done.
