How long does it take you to give up on keeping your new car clean? A year? A month? Half an hour?
Like the first scratch in pristine paint, the first spill is usually a clutch of the gut followed by the realization that it’s inevitable: eating and drinking on the go are going to happen to all but the most fastidious. Those people usually don’t have children or a long commute.
If you have carpeting or sofas or do laundry, you already know the worst culprits: coffee, mustard, ketchup, pets, kids and barf. And while you’ll no doubt be saved from the dreaded red wine spills in your car, you have to add in that Canadian perennial: road salt.
As Bob Milne, a longtime expert in keeping cars clean, and I strolled through Denny’s Touchless Car Wash in Mississauga, I glanced at the long line of cars waiting to head through. One very expensive late model car looked like it had barely been off the showroom floor for an hour. Another car looked like it had been driven hard through 100 drive-thrus. Milne acknowledged there are the “keep it clean” types and the “get it clean” types.
