The family that preserves together: Kuhnel clan honored for years of restoration work
To honor their years of dedicated preservation work, the extended Kuhnel family has been awarded the 2011 Public Service Preservation Award by the Eureka Heritage Society.
”Both on private and public levels, the Kuhnels have made a significant impact on this city,” said EHS President Chuck Petty. “Their work on behalf of Eureka's old houses is remarkable. And, in honor of our 'Year of the Window,' it should be noted that the family has kept all of their old homes' original windows, restoring many of them.”
The family includes Ron and Melanie Kuhnel, their son, Josh, Ron's sister Betty, and Melanie's daughter, Leslie Lollich, and son-in-law Paul Allen. In all, they own seven historical homes, including the family flagship: the 1908 Magdalena Zanone house at 1604 G St., which the Kuhnels had listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
